After recess on Friday, the first graders had another special treat. We had a visit from Chief Andrews from the Warren Fire Department. The fire fighters showed us some equipment, gear, and the fire truck. Students asked and answered questions. They looked through a thermal imaging camera and a few even tried on some gear.
Not too long after we were back inside the building there was a fire drill. Everyone was outside and safe in no time at all. We got to meet another community helper and learn more about what they do. In math we practiced how to solve addition problems using drawings and learned how to write number sentences (equations) to match in a fire fighter math booklet. Throughout the week we heard many fiction and nonfiction books about fire fighters and fire safety. We ended our day with the book Fire, Fire by Gail Gibbons. All students received a fire safety coloring book and a dress the fire fighter cling on board compliments of my husband Mark and Liberty Mutual.
