Guest Speaker 10/21

Hello Again,

I also wanted to take a minute to thank Randi Wachter for coming in on Friday during our Social Studies time to talk about her job as a vet tech. We have been learning about community helpers and our students were fortunate that she took the time out of her busy schedule to talk about her job and how she helps keep our pets healthy and safe.

We’ve also learned about teachers, bus drivers, farmers, police officers, and fire fighters. I hope many of you were shown your child’s community helper booklet that they brought home on Friday. Hopefully, they read you what they wrote on the back of each community helper picture. Below is a picture of the event.

Guest Reader 10/21

Hello All,

I wanted to take a minute to thank Michelle Lewis for being our guest reader last week on Friday. She read the book School Picture Day by Lynn Plourde, a Maine author. It was a fun story that was relevant since Friday was our school picture day at WCS. Here’s one picture of our special event below.

Fire Prevention Week

After recess on Friday, the first graders had another special treat. We had a visit from Chief Andrews from the Warren Fire Department. The fire fighters showed us some equipment, gear, and the fire truck. Students asked and answered questions. They looked through a thermal imaging camera and a few even tried on some gear.

Not too long after we were back inside the building there was a fire drill. Everyone was outside and safe in no time at all. We got to meet another community helper and learn more about what they do. In math we practiced how to solve addition problems using drawings and learned how to write number sentences (equations) to match in a fire fighter math booklet. Throughout the week we heard many fiction and nonfiction books about fire fighters and fire safety. We ended our day with the book Fire, Fire by Gail Gibbons. All students received a fire safety coloring book and a dress the fire fighter cling on board compliments of my husband Mark and Liberty Mutual.

Walking Field Trip to the Library

We had wonderful weather for our walking field trip to the Warren Free Public Library last Friday. I’d like to give a special thanks to Regina Gamage, Debra Ripley, Michelle Lewis, Debbie Gould, and Vicki Swindler for being chaperones for our class. We all enjoyed listening to both books read by Sara Tony-Davis, Penelope Popper, Book Doctor and The Book With No Pictures. After looking around for 15 minutes, we enjoyed one more book, Field Trip Day, read by Michelle Lewis.

All of the children were also given a book, The Friendship Fairy, compliments of the Warren Free Public Library. Then, we headed back to school on foot to make sure we arrived in time for lunch. I’d also like to thank  the Knox County Sheriff’s Department for helping our kids get across the intersection safely both times. We got to see two community helpers, librarians and police officers, on this special day. Enjoy the pictures below.

Upcoming Visit from the Fire Chief

Hello Families,

I’m excited to tell you that in addition to our walking field trip coming up this Friday the 14th all first graders will also be getting a visit from the Warren Fire Department’s Chief Andrews. We’ll get to hear about fire safety, see some fire gear, and see a fire truck up close and personal.

This will be an exciting ending to our Fire Prevention Week. We’ve been watching videos of Sparky the Fire Dog, doing fun morning seat-work with dot-to-dots and color by codes, and have been reading some great books about fire fighters, fire drills, a fire station field trip, and even a fire breathing dragon.

Be on the lookout this weekend for some pictures of our exciting day.

Thank You,

Mrs. Sturgis

Library Field Trip 10/14

Everyone should have received a notice today in your child’s home/school folder with all of the details for our upcoming trip to the Warren Free Public Library. We currently have three chaperones, and I have two others listed who will let me know if they will be able to make it.

We will be going rain or shine. If walking, we will leave the room by 9 a.m. sharp. If riding a bus due to rainy weather, we will leave the room by 9:15 a.m. We will return to the school at 10:45 a.m. in time for lunch.

We are all very excited about this opportunity. We’ll find out a little about librarians and get a chance to see the public library for any students who have not yet had the chance to visit. Keeping children excited about books is a wonderful thing. Read to your children often and let your child read to you. Make it enjoyable and fun!

Thanks,

Mrs. Sturgis
